Expert meeting of the Network of Research Universities in Bulgaria discussed technology transfer

On 1 July 2025, an expert meeting was held on intellectual property and technology transfer issues, part of the efforts to institutionalise the network of research universities in Bulgaria. The event brought together representatives of leading higher education institutions, members of the Working group on Technology Transfer, including Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’, the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy-Sofia, Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski’, Technical University of Sofia, the medical universities of Plovdiv, Varna and Pleven, as well as ‘Angel Kanchev’ University of Ruse.

The expert meeting was hosted by the Centre for Technology Transfer of the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy in Sofia.

The main topics of the meeting included:

  • Training and building administrative capacity in the field of intellectual property and technology transfer for researchers and teams in technology transfer offices.
  • Possible structuring of technology transfer offices in line with the Bulgarian context and providing qualified staff.
  • Approaches to creating a university portfolio of intellectual and industrial property products and presenting them to businesses.
  • Assessment of the impact and effectiveness of technology transfer office activities, including the development of a system for measuring results.

The joint initiative will continue to discuss opportunities for institutionalisation and sustainability of technology transfer offices in research universities.
